Winter care tips for auto parts
Cold weather is hard on rubber, plastics and fluids. A few simple checks before winter can keep your parts working and your vehicle on the road.
Start with the filters. Fuel, oil and air filters that are clogged with dirt restrict flow, and in low temperatures that restriction becomes more noticeable. Replace them on schedule so that impurities do not reach the fuel line and cylinders, where they accelerate wear.
Next, look at the plastic and rubber components around the body. Trim clips, seals and covers become brittle when it is cold and can crack if they are removed or refitted roughly. If you need to open a panel in freezing weather, let the vehicle warm up first.
Finally, keep a small set of spares on hand, such as clips, fasteners and a spare bulb. These low-cost parts are easy to lose or break during winter maintenance, and having replacements ready saves a trip to the workshop.
